Abstract

This study aims to reduce the setup time of the blistering machine in a pharmaceutical company by applying the Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) method. Prolonged setup times have been identified as a primary factor hindering productivity, with current durations exceeding the standard 45 minutes. The main causes include disorganized spare parts, the absence of standardized measuring tools, and an unpredictable scheduling system. Through the implementation of SMED, internal and external activities of the setup process were separated and optimized, resulting in a reduction of spare part preparation time from 20 minutes to 3.54 minutes (82%) and abnormal setup time from 99 minutes to 91.25 minutes (7%). These improvements significantly enhanced process efficiency, leading to increased machine productivity and reduced production costs. This research recommends the adoption of standardization and routine operator training to sustain continuous process improvements.
