Abstract

One of the main problems in the manufacturing industry is the decline in machine efficiency due to prolonged periods of downtime. This study evaluates the implementation of preventive maintenance (PM) on Line Edge and machine sander machines at PT Kakimoto House in Japan, and plans business process improvements using the Business Process Reengineering (BPR) approach. This research used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), along with qualitative data obtained through field observations and interviews. Measurement results from July to December 2023 show an average OEE value of 66%, component availability of 83%, performance efficiency of 80% and product quality of 98%. The MTBF was recorded at 138 hours and the MTTR at 0.83 hours. Key causes of machine breakdowns included unstable glue temperature, blade wear and incorrect trim settings. These findings suggest that the current PM implementation is reactive and lacks a structured, systematic framework. The results led to the development of several improvement plans. These include implementing a daily digital checklist, scheduling maintenance based on MTBF data, providing technician training and involving operators in self-inspection. In order to make the maintenance workflow more responsive and data-driven, Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is recommended as a strategic approach.
