Abstract

Liquid waste generated by the Tofu Industrial Centre (SITC) in Cibuntu has caused environmental pollution, with the Cigondewah and Cibuntu rivers categorised as lightly polluted and the Cikendal river as moderately polluted. Laboratory analyses show that the BOD, COD, TSS and pH parameters of the wastewater do not meet the quality standards set out in Indonesian Minister of Environment Regulation No. 5 of 2014. The aim of this study is to characterise the wastewater produced by tofu production processes at the SITC and analyse its environmental impact in order to inform the design of appropriate wastewater treatment. A descriptive analysis method was employed, involving sampling from three tofu factories and distributing 40 questionnaires. The results revealed an average water usage of 15.79 ± 3 litres per kilogram of soybeans, with approximately 8.52 ± 1.24 litres per kilogram discharged as wastewater. The estimated total wastewater discharge from all SITC factories in 2024 is 2,023,168 L/day. The daily pollution loads include 4,920 kg of BOD, 8,370 kg of COD and 1,252 kg of TSS. These values indicate significant pollution potential, which could degrade the quality of receiving water bodies. Therefore, improved waste management, increased environmental awareness and the implementation of appropriate, sustainable wastewater treatment technologies are urgently needed.
