Abstract

Organic waste was the largest component of household waste in Indonesia, thus requiring effective management strategies. Composting with local microorganisms (MOL) as bioactivators was one of the environmentally friendly solutions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of five types of MOL, namely orange peel, leftover rice, coconut fiber, bamboo shoots, and banana stems on compost quality. The research used an experimental design with five treatments and three replications, observed for 35 days. The measured parameters included temperature, pH, color, odor, texture, as well as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, organic carbon, and C/N ratio. The results showed that MOL from leftover rice and banana stems were the most significant in accelerating compost maturity, indicated by neutral pH (6–7), finer texture, earthy odor, and the highest nitrogen and phosphorus contents compared to other treatments. All treatments met the compost quality standards of SNI 19-7030-2004, but MOL from leftover rice and banana stems were recommended as the most effective bioactivators to produce high-quality compost within 35 days.
