Abstract

Paving blocks are paving materials that are widely used because they are efficient and environmentally friendly. Their quality is greatly influenced by compressive strength and water absorption. The addition of nano silica as an additive has the potential to improve the performance of paving blocks, because the very fine particle size is able to fill the micro pores of concrete, increase density, and strengthen the structure of the material. This study aims to determine the effect of adding nano silica on the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks using experimental methods. Based on the results of the study, the addition of nano silica has a positive effect on the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks. The higher the percentage of nano silica, the higher the compressive strength produced. The compressive strength increased from 20.35 MPa in normal paving blocks to 25.85 MPa in a mixture with 3% nano silica. Conversely, the water absorption rate decreased from 20.40% (without nano silica) to 11.02% in a mixture with 3% nano silica. This shows that the addition of nano silica can increase the strength and reduce the porosity of paving blocks.
